Overall Curriculum Intent Statement

The child is at the centre of what we do at BJS. We value their individuality and creativity, and aim to equip them with the skills, self-discipline and confidence to succeed and keep themselves safe.

Our curriculum offer is challenging, inspiring and accessible for all pupils, enabling them to achieve their potential. It is designed to ensure that ALL children, regardless of their starting point, will achieve success, gain confidence and develop independence.

Our curriculum is built on strong pedagogical principles. For example, cognitive science research which identifies the impact of sequencing and spaced learning in order to help pupils retain knowledge and skills in their long term memory.

The progression of skills and knowledge is planned and honed. It promotes ‘learning without limits’, and embodies achievement, enjoyment and enrichment. We encourage children to be curious and empower them to make choices in their learning.

Our curriculum promotes a positive attitude to learning. It is broad and balanced, with opportunities for pupils to gain Cultural Capital, whilst also learning how to learn through the 6Rs.

SMSC is a thread through all curriculum subjects. It helps to support positive attitudes and respect of self, others and the world around them.
